1500 is my favourite size for 40k. You can cover most of your bases at this level, but you have to make decisions on things you want vs need. 17/1850 let you have both by and large.
1000 pointers are fun too.
Above 2500 (Apoc and up for me!)
2000-2500 (A grand game)
1500-1850 (A good solid game)
1000 (Short and sweet)
Below 1000 (Kill-team like games)

1500-1850 - large enough to use what I want but small enough to stop people from going all-out
Thats kind of like getting asked 'what kind of sex do you like'... lol. I simply enjoy playing, regardless of point size.
I generally play 2K +, but I limit myself to 1 FOC so I can run more of my options, Once I hit 2500+ then double FOC come into play.
I play single FOC up to 5000pts with fortifications and allies over 3000pts as an option.
This brings our full armies into play, but stops shenanigans of FOC abuse.
I played a 1000 pt and 750 pt game last night With my newly acquired Dark Angels. Man it sucked. In retrospect I should have played as codex marines as they had a 175 pt cap on your HQ choice. no belial, azrael, or samael.
At low points levels I can't field the type of army that draws me into 40k. Its a shame too as I would LOVE to join their league, but its just not fun.
I tend to prefer pickup games at 1500pts, keeps things at a nice balanced and interesting (as in there wont that many points for the more nasty things) yet enough to make a strong list all the same.
Since I've been using Eldar Jetbikes in killteam I have been so successful it's hard not to love 200pt games.
