fair enough I'll go back to ignoring this thread then
However the process of robo-insemination is far too complex for the human mind!
A knee high fence, my one weakness
The more I think about this, the more I wonder if 6th edition was actually released early. As in, they were working on a big revamp of 40k and released a ruleset in 2012 that they were *happy with,* but didn't quite go as far as they wanted to, for business reasons - and now this is the fully-fledged version of those ideas.
Evidence - and this is only my insane theory - would be the way that things continued to shift and change after the launch of 6th edition, with Supplements, Dataslates, Stronghold Assault and Escalation, and then D-Weapons in regular 40k with the Knights. There's other stuff, as well, like the way battle reports in White Dwarf seemed to discard the FOC pretty regularly and fairly early after the release of 6th.
Instead of a two-year dev cycle from the release of 6th, we might want to think of this version as the culmination of a six-year cycle beginning with the release of 5th. It seems like this version will have more of the ideas that we started to see in 6th, but carried on into a more fully-formed iteration.
IMO it sounds as cool as hell.

I think there's something to it. It's not like 7th Edition/Not 7th Edition/6.x Edition has come out of nowhere. I could easily be convinced Escalation and Stronghold Assault were part of the new edition development cycle they decided to release early as a nice little xmas bonus for the company. I didn't buy them at the time, and on reflection I'm glad I didn't. Obviously I have no way of knowing whether the new edition will render them obsolete, there's certainly no sign of them disappearing from the website, but it leaves a bad taste in the mouth, releasing rules additions 6 months from a re-write/re-organisation of the main rule book.
I'll be pre-ordering 7th/N7th/6.x on the 17th, but I gather the rest of my gaming group are going to let me jump first and see how the FAQs line up with 6th.
It's novel being an edition pathfinder.
Wait for the red light...
Except that Escalation and SH were obviously bolted-on to sell models that were intended for Apoc but weren't selling well due to not enough people playing Apoc (ironic since now we have Minipocalypse). And the dataslates were tossed out there to help move boxed sets that weren't selling well for Christmas, as well as a few models that didn't have rules currently for whatever reason. They grew from that into being just utter insanity. If they'd been planning some new edition to be released just six months after Esc and SH that would include them, it STILL makes those two money-grab books, selling $85 of rules to people that would then be included in a new $100 rulebook they'd have to buy because of core changes to the game.
I don't think their attempts to suck money from people are thought out that far in advance. 7th edition, much like Esc, SH, the whole Knights fiasco, and dataslates, is an attempt to get a lot more money coming in ASAP to help with their flagging revenue and profits.
