The answer was a long the lines of they were just robots before that.

They weren't though, they have used male pronouns, male voice actors and have had what can only be described as facial hair and bodies that are much more masculine than they are androgynous since the beginning. The first female Transformers were introduced in 198506 after all. The only difference is now we have hopes they will stop being treated like some kind of oddity that has to be justified while male Transformers are accepted as the default.

Gendered robots are patently absurd, the trouble is Transformers have always been gendered. No one seems to have a problem with male Transformers it is always female Transformers that get peoples blood up.

So apparently:

Tailgate has been genderswapped. This is actually really important as it is I think only the third time a Transformer has been gender swapped (the other being Drag Strip and Slipstream). It is also the first time to my knowledge a female Transformer has been given a masculine type body thugh Strike might qualify too. Either way it is important especially since it is being speculated she changes her gender identity after meeting Nautica.

Gobots had a Ladybot way back in the 80's.

Looked a bit like a stereotypical butch though.

Gobots had a quite large number of ladybots (though they were really cyborgs so gendering makes sense but W/E) - Crasher, Smallfoot, Vamp, Pathfinder, Spay-C off the top of my head plus several female humans and non-white characters. Diversity wise it leaves TF in the dust.
