Depends how you view it, Russia has been the the dominant power in the region for centuries, now neighbours it has considered its subordinates are leaning towards the West which it considers a threat. It wants to keep them in line. I mean it is bull**** in the sense they shouldn't be doing it but it makes sense from a Russian security perspective, a buffer of effective client states is a good thing.

Not really. WWII was a direct consequence of WWI, it was really one war in two parts and that is something that is entirely lacking from this situation. Russian doesn't have significant grudges against the West, it wants to control its neighbours which is ****ty but not the same thing. Prior to WWII Germany believed it had been humiliated and unfairly victimised by the Treaty of Versailles (which was frankly true, it was unnecessarily brutal towards Germany).

We aren't though. We are sitting at a point where Russia is trying to re-assert its authority over its neighbours and as a great power and be taken seriously again. It is certainly a serious situation and the ramifications for the Ukraine, Georgia and other traditional Russian border states is dire but it isn't going to be a likely catalyst for a broader conflict.

Edit: I think you're downplaying russias attitude to the west. There is significant resentment for the west due to the cold war particularly that its end did not result in the bright future russians hoped for.

There is some, but not as much as you would think because the Soviet Union collapses on its own rather than being defeated. Russia also wasn't deliberately humiliated and brutalised.

I don't think we'll see another world war, or any war against Russia.

Nobody has the stomach for it, as we all have too much to lose. The world is a very different place these days. Still scary, still paranoid, but not as war hungry as it once was.
