Yeah, baking soda is great. I have used it for snow. Just added a small amount of blue ink gives it a greats shade.
The base is really looking great! If I had a hat on right now I'd take it of.

I love this. You did a really awesome job painting him at night and getting the OSL spot on. Really really good.

Thanks! I finally finished up this figure. I decided the base needed a little something more, so now our little hobbit has a nasty surprise in store. By the end the whole scene had taken on a definite Mirkwood feel.

I took him up to the Bay Area Open this past weekend and he won best in show! I wanted to give a quick plug for the group running the painting competition. They're attempting to create a yearly circuit of events culminating in their dragon slayer competition where all of the event winners compete for their ultimate title. In 2015 they have contests planned for conventions in Sacramento, Las Vegas, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and even across the pond in London (hopefully more too). The competition is judged on the open system, so there's no single 1st, 2nd, 3rd. All entries are rated on a set standard (1-10) and the judges votes are averaged. Medals are handed out based on your score, so if 10 people score high enough for gold they hand out 10 golds. It's a nice system in that everyone's work is recognized. If you don't feel up to the more rigorous competition they also have a journeymen level for less experienced painters. Another nice feature was when you got your score you also got a print out of comments from the various judges. I thought it was great to see what they liked and what they didn't. That can be very helpful if you want to improve your scores for future events. If you're near any of their events or just curious check out their website. They're still new so more info should be posted over time.

Very nice work here (on a very nice mini). You've really made this diorama work.

Congrats on the win. If I remember, CMON supports the Bay Area Open, and you might have a trip to Adepticon this year. Is that right?

Thanks! And yup, the BAO was a Crystal Brush qualifier. The group running the tournament (Frontline Gaming) actually picked the Crystal Brush qualifying figure, not the judges for the painting contest. For whatever reason this figure didn't jump out at them, but they did select another one of mine, a historical figure, so I will be heading to Adepticon this year!

I was told that at least one or two of the Frontline people were really excited to see historical entries for a change. Apparently they're sick of seeing space marine after space marine!
