Default Thinking About - Is It True

So, I am thinking about returning to 40K after several years away. Is it really true that is a normal game of 40K and by normal I mean non-Apoc that if you have enough points you can now use super-heavies and monstrous creatures?

    Thanks.

There are two answers to this.
    1) Yes, monstrous creatures have been in the game forever but now Lords of War (Super heavies) are part of the normal game.
    2) Maybe, you should sit down with your opponent and discuss what sort of game you are playing. Not just points but any limits, house rules, or themes.

And with the introduction of Imperial Knights you don't even need to use the Lord of War slot to have several in your army. Yes. There is almost no difference between "normal" 40K and an Apoc. game. In fact, things are worse in the "normal" game because there aren't any Apoc Formations allowed to challenge the Superheavies.

All units that were previously "Apocolypse Only" are now "Lords of War", Armys can usually take a Lord of War as part of thier standard game, but, it eats up a lot of points.

The rules are now written to encourage you and your opponent to have a conversation about the type of game you'd like to play, so if you don't want to face superheavies, just talk to your friends before you play.

Just find people that you enjoy playing with. It's just as frustrating for a power player to play a fluff player as it the other way around. If you don't care match your style to those around you. This is a (great) game. Just have fun!

It would have helped the situation if they had brought over the "you may not buy a Lord of War unit costing more than 25% of the total of your army" rule from the HH game. That would put the really scary stuff, like a fully-loaded 4-sponson Baneblade up in the 2000+ range where there should be enough firepower to take care of it.

I don't think such restrictions are necessary, because if someone is going to purposely be a dick about the game you probably don't want to be playing them anyway.

Also most of them aren't that bad. That Baneblade is a lot of points and not massively hard to destroy. It's things like Revenants with 4+ destroyer shots which get silly and that kind of thing really comes down to an agreement between players not to be dicks.

It would help the situation if they asked players to be decent human beings and talk to each other about how they could best enjoy the game they were about to play.

Oh wait, they did; a simple, elegant solution, ask players to be grown ups and talk to ensure they all enjoy the next few hours.

Yes, because no one ever misrepresents what they're going to be playing in order to slip harder stuff in than planned; or plays in a tournament (even a supposed "local, friendly" type) where you're supposed to bring an all-around list and play it all day.

More than anything else, pricing in the force-multiplication factor would solve a ton of problems in 40k. What I mean by this is: A Heldrake with the flamer of doom costs 170 points. But fielding 2 of them at once is more than twice as effective as a single, so their price should go up a bit. This would also have the side-effect of probably getting more of the "marginal" units on the table- to continue our Chaos example, if taking 3 Heldrakes would make each one cost 190 points (i.e. +10 pts per drake for each add'l drake), Raptors start looking more useful by comparison.
