Smile Commander Dante's Latest Happenings / Upcoming Projects

    Heya 'Hulkers,

It's been over a year since I have been much active on the site, with life getting in the way. But now I'm living in a new nicer place, and have had time to delve back into my minis which were in storage. I just wanted to show you what I'll be working on in the upcoming months (when I can get time as I'm expecting my firstborn to come next month!). So, progress on these projects will take a while, but I'll post the before and afters.

Also, when I get a few games in I'll post some pics of that, maybe will be fun for ya guys to see.

Looking forward to getting involved in helping with game questions again, so please let me know whats on your mind!

Well boy o' boy...it's a boy! My first son is 6 months old now, which doesn't leave a whole lot of time for painting or gaming. However, I did manage to put some time into my Ultramarine and Imperial Fist scouts, so that my ASC games will have a well rounded team.

I don't know if I was rusty, or if they turned out OK, but I'm glad to have them off my painting que that's for sure haha.

Sadly, I am lacking almost completely on Imperial Guard models so that I can't field any sort of army at all for ASC, except a few Ogryns which I just luckily got super cheap on ebay; they also had been neglected for a long time but I finally managed to slap some colors on and this is the result. At least now I will have something to use for 'Stranger' encounters.

Finished these boys in under a week, with a little effort. Fun! Again still using my Vallejo acrylic set, and I found that I really liked the paint on gloss varnish for use indoors, since my spray varnish which I only use outside won't work well in cold weather (tends to clump and not finish clean).

Yay it's been a long time coming, but I finally found time to do justice for my Throned Genestealer Patriarch. Enjoy!

One of the important changes for me was switching up to a massage chair for my workstation which completely eliminates all the back strain I used to get on the stool that I formerly sat on for hours on end. Now I can lean in fully over my workbench with my chest on a pad while kneeling which is extremely comfortable. Additionally the forearm rest often suffices better than my actual workbench for leaning in close to a model while being in a position to stabilize my arms and hands for maximum control. If you can procure yourself a massage chair with these features I highly recommend it. My Ottlite and overhead florescent give great overall lighting conditions as well. And slapped some paint on my old pyrovore that was just malingering away in the background just so I could get it off my paint que. It's easily adaptable to Advanced Space Crusade so it'll come in useful time to time also. Click image for larger version.

Also here are some of the 'Chaos Androids' that came with my basic Space Crusade sets, but are able to be used in Advanced Space Crusade. I didn't spend a ton of time on them as they won't get used all that regularly, but they are fun to have and occasionally put into use. That said, I can't wait to get them on the board as soon as possible!

So I spent the last week turning around my Chaos Drednaughts from my Space Crusade and expansion sets. They had been sitting a long time and I wondered if I would ever get to them, but finally their turn came. At first I considered doing duplicate color scheme which would have made the process a lot more streamlined and assembly line, but then I decided to use this as an opportunity to push myself out of my comfort zone and dig a little deeper to see what I could really come up with. So, I developed 5 different schemes, half-planned and half-improvised. The main thing is I felt like I was pretty much in control over the process except for the 'pink' dred which I had intended to be a lighter color, but used too much dark in my wash and just made the best of it; I think it came out decently though. The big one however, I literally had to restart about half-way in because it just wasn't coming together how I wanted at all. So, I soaked it in some diluted 'Tough Green' (think simple green) for a few hours, then took and old toothbrush and worked off the paint so I could start over. The second attempt came out much closer to my original vision for it; it was also my first time trying electricity on a large scale piece. Overall, I'm very pleased and think they turned out pretty much how I wanted. Lastly, I created a custom case out of an old shoebox and some stiff foam I had saved from some packing material. Thanks for looking!
