It's not uncommon for series DVD to be released when the new season starts (when there is going to be a new season). This gives a reason for people to watch the first reruns. If they have the DVD, they ignore the reruns for their own schedule. If people ignore the reruns, they will not be watching the commercials. No one watches commercials, then revenue falls.

At least, that is the classic perspective on it.

Yeah, that annoys me with Game of Thrones, because I can't afford a Sky subscription to watch it live, and HBO blocks their online service in the UK, my choice is either to watch it on an 'unofficial' stream, or wait a year for the DVD. :/

Yeah, I hate it, too. Especially since all I have is streaming services or DVD. While I could get an antenna, we just have never bothered. Having an antenna or cable is rather pointless without a DVR these days, too, and half the time what was on the DVR just languished.

Doesn't services like iTunes and Googleplay have them digitally for purchase, I seem to recall a few years ago Disney released episodes of their TV on iTunes pretty quickly after they aired on US TV....
