First time list 500 points High Elves

Okay so I am a long time 40k player who recently jumped to fantasy with a High Elves army. Mostly I just wanted to these because I have always thought they would be a beautiful army.

So I am part of a campaign and the initial month's lists have to be 500 points.
Here is what I came up with:

Mage lvl 1 on Elven steed (General)
Silver Helms x8 w/ shields, and High Helm
Ellyrian Reavers x6 w/ spears & bows
Ellyrian Reavers x5 w/ spears & bows

I haven't so much as played a demo game yet, but from what I see of the rules this I think shouldn't get its *** handed to it too hard at 500 points. I figure play fast and maneuverable with the cavalry, and make sure the charge is when I choose with the Silver Helms, use the mage for either counter spell or for heavy hitting (albeit I am not sure how effective a hitter he will be), and use the Ellyrian Reavers as mobile ranged shooting for harassment, objectives, and providing side charges.

Again this is all theory for me as I am a virgin at this game.
I would ask you think this over a hair and feel free to make any suggestions you think would improve this list.

I just bought all this, but I acquired:
Prince on Steed, a Prince with Banner, Teclis, 2 mages on foot, 1 mage on steed, a noble on griffon,
5 Dragon Princes, 15 White Lions, 12 Phoenix guard, a tiranoc chariot, 20 sword masters of hoeth
30 archers, 20 lothern sea guard, 30 spearmen (these have the bitz to be sea guard as well), 15 Ellyrian Reavers, 16 Silver Helms
2 eagle bolt throwers

(I got all that for $165 most unpainted and not put together)

I think that is everything so feel free to throw out any suggestions that fit without me having to buy anything else.

I think it's the latter. I'm not familiar with the game at 500 points. Your theory is sound (play fast and skirmishy with the cav and use the caster for counter spells). I can only guess as to how this will play out. Watch out for VC or anyone running any of the End Times undead stuff - rezing stuff at low points games quickly breaks the game.

a Lvl 1 isn't going to dominate the magic phase, but at least you'll be able to throw some stuff out there. I'd be careful trying to throw 6 dice at a big spell with him if he's in a unit. a miscast could be bad times. Get those bolt throwers built and ready next

Good point about the miscast worry and the rezing.
I was wrong about the bolt throwers as I had a friend give me another one that is lead from the late 80's when he visited London. I just need to crew it. The rules for the campaign as I understand it require paint so I have to get this all painted.
We have to keep the 500 point army list and expand on it when we hit 1000 points and this continues to 2500. How do you suggest building from here.
I was thinking about raising the mage to level 2 and adding another squad of reavers, and a 5 man squad of dragon princes with with drake master and musician with a star lance.
