And let us not forget. Metal is about rocking out. It's not about posing and poncing about. Babymetal rock hard. That's enough.
Isn't Black Sabbath widely regarded as the first Heavy Metal band?
And the per capita metal band rate of Finland is insane.

I saw an article on Facebook regarding BM, and the comments were filled with much hate, and much anti-hate. It was a Cracked article saying that Babymetal are sexualised and how creepy it is that they're being followed by, "middle-aged men with BO and bad skin." Most common arguments were:

    - They're too commercial!
    - How can little girls be metal anyway?
    - They're Japanese, everyone knows metal is an American thing!
    - It all sounds the same anyway!

Was pretty funny watching people point out that metal hasn't been about railing against commercialism for decades now, as it's all commercialised as hell. Not only that, but listing off all the metal artists that have endorsed them, as well as fans of BM endorsing them, that metal is actually really big in Japan, and Norway/Finland/Scandinavia in general kicks America's backside in the realm of being metal anyway. Plus that their style is pretty varied compared to the samey metal we get these days.

Was pretty heartening to see how many people were posting stuff like, "well my six year old daughter loves Babymetal, so go f*ck yourself."
Well, the Cracked article itself basically says that groups like Babymetal exist just to help creepy Japanese guys get off because they're a culture of pedophiles and highlights "they invented schoolgirl used panty vending machines." And you expect the comments for that article to be that great?

I read the article yesterday and it was just awful, and served as a good reminder that Cracked has no leg to stand on with social commentary.

As for people commenting on "it's not metal" because it's not American or they can't growl or whatever... That's not just them. People do the same with Nightwish, Within Temptation, or Amaranthe. They seem to think metal is only some American dude growling incoherently into a microphone while someone abuses instruments nearby.

Babymetal is kind of weird... they have the instrumental element of metal but the lyrics feel more like J-Pop. It's still probably more classified metal, but it's a new kind.

They're not my cup of tea, because I'm not a fan of J-Pop and much less a fan of any song whose lyrics I can't understand. There's rare exceptions, but if I can't understand most of what a band is singing *and* I'm not a fan of the style, that's not going to work. I won't say they're bad because I'm not into their style, though, and if people like them, cool.

(Funny thing... most of the time when I enjoy a song whose lyrics I can't understand, it's either German or from that Norway/Finland/Scandinavia area. Granted, harsher German metal is still disturbing to me. I love German, which is probably something embedded in my genes, but it can sound scary when growled out harshly while someone's waging war with instruments in the background.)

The having a house and job bit isn't that fantastical. Especially as you have to basically bust your *** with no enjoyment in your life most of the week if you want to rise through the ranks in the job. That bit seems real to me.

Not as real? Being able to make friends easily and having them invite you to things all through the week. Clearly that's fantasy.
