Thread: Supergirl

  1. #1

    Default Supergirl

And it's now airing on Sky in the UK.

Got the first episode on now, and it's rather good so far. Also got the second episode lined up for later.

Anyone else giving this a bash?

Story and acting are solid thus far - but some of the effects don't quite work. Small issue of course

    Oop....and a lady Kryptonian General.

Not clear if gender switched Zod though, and I'm completely ignorant on Supergirl general knowledge, so can't really offer other suggestions!

The only Kryptonian General I know the name of is Zod. His usual accomplice is his lover Faora (or Ursa depending on which version of her they're using), but I think her rank is a Commander or Lieutenant rather than General. Might have gotten a promotion though. A quick look on wikipedia tells me that her name is Astra and that she is Alura (Supergirl's mother) evil twin. Pretty sure that she's an original creation for the tv show

Supergirl doesn't really have much of a rogues gallery of her own, most of the villains she tends to battle are shared with Superman as she's been resident in Metropolis for much of her published life and also cos the universe isn't exactly awash with villains capable of challenging her, she's actually more powerful than her cousin as Batman found out from studying her DNA, female kryptonians actually absorb and process solar radiation better than males do. Not sure if they'll bring that up in the tv show though.

Of the villains I know to be featuring so far we have:

Toyman - Two of them actually, a villain by that name, but also Kara's best friend Winn's full name is Winslow Schott Jnr, who is Toyman in the comics. In the tv series it's his father Winslow Schott Snr who is the villain.
Hellgrammite - Mutant freak, capable of coccooning others and turning them into creatures like himself enslaved to his will.
Cyborg Superman - Albeit in a (thus far) non-superpowered role as his alter-ego Hank Henshaw. Does have glowing red eyes though so not fully human.
Maxwell Lord - A Justice League villain with serious mind control powers. He is capable of controlling Superman and the only way Wonder Woman could stop him from doing so in the comics was to kill him.
Reactron - VERY explosive villain, blew himself up in the comics and took the entire planet of New Krypton with him in doing so!
Livewire - Powerful electricity based villainess.
Thomas Oscar Morrow - Justice League villain. Brilliant (and mad) scientist specialising in advanced robotics. Creates the superhero android Red Tornado.
Non - Kryptonian military thug, formerly a brilliant scientist who got lobotomised by Krypton's Science Council as punishment for unethical research. Now nearly mute. VERY strong
Vartox - Strong alien with a power axe, basically a copy of the 30th century villain The Persuader, one of the Legion of Super Heroes nastiest foes.

All of these are Superman or Justice League villains really, but just as Arrow has borrowed a load of the less known Batman villains (ie the ones unlikely to be used in a movie) so it appears Supergirl will do much the same. Seinsible policy really, gives these characters more exposure which some of them sorely deserve esp Max Lord and T.O. Morrow. Hopefully at some point we'll see Supergirl crossing over with Flash, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow to give us a tv Justice League, which would rock. Depending on the villlain Constantine too (yes I know Constantine doesn't have a show at the moment, but it's been established on Arrow that he is part of the same shared universe), and Kara could well use his help against a villain like Silver Banshee.
Either there is life in the universe more intelligent than us, or we are the most intelligent form of life in the universe. Either way, it's a worrying thought!

Three episodes in and its getting very good, the pilot was kind of heavy handed at times and the second episode was kind of recapping a lot of themes but with teh third I think its started to find its feet more, with a 'She's not Superman and won't go crawling to him for help' plotline. Some genuinely amusing moments too.

Bailed on the second episode last night - went up pub instead.

But I intend to watch it, and the third one tonight - Dr Who allowing of course, because there's enjoying new telly, and then there's Dr Who.

I really need to catch up.

So far it's not blown my socks off, but has been well worth the watch. And as a feminist I feel a certain duty to support such a show.

Yup it's not the best teevee show ever or anything but its fun and cheerful and has a great message and a bit of diversity in the cast and whatnot. The latest episode blew my socks off I will say that, but only 'cos I'm really fond of a certain character who gets introduced this episode...
