Episode VII is looking promising so far. Rey seems to be an actual central character who won't be easily knocked off, and while I imagine Phasma will die at some point (unless she "sees the evil of her ways" and turns to the other side, but I doubt that), I think she can be a good, strong villain for the movie.

They should let Stackpole get involved with the new novels and comics. (I'd suggest Alston too, but, well, that's not possible, sadly.) The X-Wing comics and novels had some strong female characters who weren't just there to be someone's love interest or die horribly. Elscol Loro creating her own little force (with ex-Imperial special forces among them) was awesome, and Plourr was another good one (even though there was a "relationship" story thrown in with her, it made sense, and didn't do anything to diminish her). And Gara Petothel/Lara Notsil/Kirney Slane helped the New Republic almost stop Zsing (while also freeing a bunch of test subjects, breaking loose from Iron Fist, saving one of the male leads, and then going off to start her own business). Mirax Terrik was pretty good, and her one "death" wasn't really a death (because she was actually elsewhere helping the NR in a huge way when the convoy she was supposed to be in got him). And then there's Yssane Isard, still IMO the nastiest Imperial to date. (Thrawn might have been more dangerous as a leader, but Isard was tricky dangerous.)

It looks like it's trending in the right direction. Time will tell.

Being black hasn't been much better in the Star Wars universe... mainly because there practically haven't been any black people in the universe, I think less than half a dozen in the movies. Off the top of my head, I can remember Lando, Mace Windu, and the captain of Padme's guard.

The Hera thing did catch me a bit, though... She's pretty major in the series, seems to be the actual leader of the group, so she should be everywhere. Weird.
