Ask not the EldarGal a question, for she will give you three answers, all of which are puns and terrifying to know. Back off man, I'm a feminist. Ia! Ia! Gloppal Snode!

Review "embargo" is lifted. I've read a bunch of them already (and despite saying "no spoilers" I now know a lot more about the story than I did from the trailers). The consensus is that it's a great movies, good for fans and non-fans alike, and gets back to the core of Star Wars.

Being critics, they have to pick at something so they don't come off sounding like raving fanboys and fangirls. The top bit of criticism from any of them seems to have been that there are quite a few similarities with A New Hope, but that's tempered a bit by them admitting that it might have been a good move to go with something "safe" like that to bring people back after the mess of the prequels. And given that the original movies were good fun, having some similarities aren't really a serious issue.

One of the plot synopses has me really wanting to see the movie to see if it was just explained poorly, or, if not, what the heck is going on.

Brief rundown of the synopses below, in spoiler-hiding white text (just in case you don't want to know ANYTHING about the story):

Okay, so... Trying to summarize what I read. Basically, it seems like the New Republic's grip on things fell apart when Luke Skywalker went missing. The First Order sprang up to take advantage of this and, I guess, try to re-establish the Empire, or something like it. The Rebel Alliance/New Republic ended up becoming the Resistance, trying to fight back. Poe Dameron has a map/plans (it was called both in the same article) that he stuffs on BB-8 before getting captured by Kylo Ren. BB-8 meets Rey, who later meets Finn, an ex-Stormtrooper who chose to leave the First Order for some reason. They have to get what's in BB-8 to the Resistance (and General Leia?), and end up recruiting the Millennium Falcon in the process. Hijinks ensue, and there's a Starkiller base for good measure.

Okay, yeah, some of it does sound like A New Hope... but is also different enough to not feel like a retread.

So, its made between 50 and 55 million colonial not-pounds in its first day, breaking the previous record of 43.5 million CNP earned in one day by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 in the US and broke records in the UK as well. Yay.

    Also:
Today I met a woman, whose age she did not mention because she is a lady, was buying a lot of Star Wars merch because we had it on sale. And she was telling me that she couldn’t wait to see the new one and how she was going to stay up and see the midnight release and take pictures of people in costumes. She was so excited, and then she leans in close:

“You know, all these young men at these conventions- they see me and they ask me trivia about this that and the other thing and I tell them- ‘Son, I went to see the first one in 1977 before you were even a twinkle in your daddy’s eye.’ If I don’t know the answer, its because I damn forgot.”
