Heartily recommend giving SBG a bash.

Couple of boxes at most, and a single character and you've got yourself a table worthy force.

Not a massive skirmish fan these days (somewhat spoiled by Necronmunda and Mordheim), but don't let the stripped down mechanics fool you. It's a really, really fun game!

I actually picked up last week's WD to get a copy of that (after I noticed it was in there). Makes me glad the local GW manager stopped chucking magazines after a week and kept them around a little longer for those who might have missed the week before. But the PDF would be nice for my Kindle.

The game is actually fun, yeah. I have a 500 point Mirkwood force, basically it's Tauriel and Legolas with 10 Rangers attached to each. You can have much larger forces if you want (with Goblins or Hobbits). A Dwarf army at 500 points would be under $100, just get a couple boxes of warriors and a couple characters. That's really all you need. And it's quick enough to get in matches between other games.

I'll have to check this out. I really liked LOTR, it's a solid system and pretty fun. Only nobody plays it I my area. Haven't played the hobbit version though, and I know some things are different
