Fist, drop the runes priests. They don't have a unit to hang out with, since if you put them with wolves the unit loses the 12" move, and the 12" charge.

Second, you are going to have a very tough time with objective games. You've taken very hard units, but you've skimped too much on good light scoring units, and utility units.

Honestly, Thunderwolf Cavalry is good, but you shouldn't be spamming it. A good example of this kind of thing is Space Marine TH/SS Terminators. Yes, 5 is good, 10 is workable, but fielding the max of 30 is absurd and makes for a pretty bad list.

Drop some of the wolves, drop the priests, get at least one more scoring unit in there, and some long range anti-tank to crack open transports for your assault element.
"Nuh Uhn" is the valid counter argument to "Uhn Huh," which was the entire Affirmative case presented. -JWolf

What scoring unit configuration would you add, and which long range anti-tank?

I'm going to start with your first list and then revisit the rest after you address the following:

    1) You have an Independent Character with not Invulnerable save x2. BAD idea, what's worse is that your kit neuters them. The difference between Space Wolves and normal Marines is that our H.Q.'s are unmatched in Hth. Your ideal Lord/ Battle leader on a Wolf Mount should go:

Storm Shield (Or belt of russ), Frost Blade (or Thunderhammer), and maybe Wolf Tooth Necklace and Saga of the Warrior Born (or saga of the bear).

Anything else is just not going to cut it.

    2) Grey Hunters: You have comitted the Cardinal Sin: mixing special weapons. Fix that.

    3) There is no need for 2 Thunderwolf HQ's. Use those points for either a pack or two of Long Fangs with missile launchers (a pack of 5 with 4 missile launchers is 130 points). This gives you some more long range punch to help you out.

4)Never, ever give Mark of the Wulfen to anyone on a Thunderwolf mount. You're better off not taking it as you already have rending and a base of 4 attacks.

    5) I'm assuming you're going 3 units of 5 Thunderwolves? If so that is wasted bodies and points. You can drop them down to 3 guys, 1 w/power fist, 1 w/melta bombs, 1 plain. Maximize their abilities and have enough points for two more full squads of grey hunters. I would do 10 Grey hunters with 2x Flamers and MotW in a rhino if you go for more troops.

Understand these are the biggest issues with your plans and that you should double check some things in the codex. The lists are bold but just be careful not to go crazy with all the toys we Wolves get.

Yes, agreed about the Mark of Wulfen on the Thunderwolves, realised why i shouldn't have taken whilst playing a game using this unit last night.

The unit of 5 Thunderwolves however performed very well with the exception of mark of the wulfen, so seems a pity to cut the unit in size but i do agree that they are probably too expensive in that configuration. You think three thunderwolves maxed out represents better points value and is more effective right? Is it worthwhile taking power fists on these guys?

Will amend list later - not got codex infront of me right now doh!

Which thunderwolf HQ would you drop, i was thinking of dropping the wolf guard battle leader?

Default New new new list - very different from the last

    CANIS CAVALRY - 1250 POINTS

    CANIS WOLFBORN

RUNE PRIEST W/ CHOOSER OF THE SLAIN & RUNIC ARMOUR

    THUNDERWOLF CAVALRY <5 UNITS>

    1 W/ HEAVY BOLTER

LONE WOLF W/ TERMIE ARMOUR & TWIN WOLF CLAWS & MELTA BOMBS (70 POINTS)

    TOTAL = 1210

    CANIS CAVALRY - 1500 POINTS

    DROP THE LONE WOLF

    ADD FOLLOWING:

    WOLF GUARD TERMINATORS <5 UNITS>
    W/ THUNDER HAMMER & CHAINFISTS
    IN RHINO

    OVERALL TOTAL 1485

    CANIS CAVALRY - 2000 POINT

GO WITH 1500 LIST AND ADD THE FOLLOWING:

    WOLF GUARD PACK <10 UNITS>
1 W/ MARK OF THE WULFEN
ALL WITH POWER WEAPON INSTEAD OF CLOSE COMBAT WEAPON OR BOLT PISTOL
    IN RHINO TRANSPORT
ONE WOLF GUARD UPGRADED TO ARJAC ROCKFIST

    OVERALL TOTAL 1960

    CANIS CAVALRY - 3000 POINTS

    ADD THE FOLLOWING:

    LONG FANGS <5 UNITS + SQUAD LEADER>

    THUNDERWOLF CAVALRY <5 UNITS>
    2 W/ MELTA BOMBS
    1 W/ POWER FIST

    BLOOD CLAWS <15 UNITS> WITH:

    1 W/ FLAMER
    1 W/ MELTAGUN
1 UPGRADED TO LUKAS THE TRIKSTER
    WITH LAND RAIDER CRUSADER

NB: I BELIEVE THIS TO BE LEGAL, I KNOW INCLUDING THE LANDRAIDER I HAVE 4 HEAVY SUPPORT OPTIONS HOWEVER UNDER
WOLF GUARD IT STATES A LANDRAIDER MAYBE TAKEN AS DEDICATED TRANSPORT, SO WOLF GUARD TOOK THAT, THE BLOOD CLAWS
TOOK THE RHINO AND SIMPLY SWAPPED OVER.

    OVERALL TOTAL 3995

Is this a better list? Comments and feedback please

    1250 List:

Drop the Lone Wolf, drop 2 Thunderwolves, make an identical Thunderwolf unit. More bang for your buck and another threat.

Drop the Lascannons and Heavy Bolter, Missile Launchers are more ubiquitous and cost effective.

Give the Grey Hunters Melta Guns for Alpha Strike ability.

Drop Runic Armor and use the save points to buy a Drop Pod for the Long Fangs, that way your Grey Hunters show up all at the same time.

    For 1500:

Terminators can ride in a Rhino. Wolf Guard Terminators need either a Land Raider or Drop Pod, your points are better spent on a Dreadnought or two at this point level.

However, I would strongly recommend Troops instead. 2 more packs of Grey Hunters would be advisable.

    2000 Point:

If you want to throw in another 500 points, fill out the Thunderwolves First, then revisit with more Long Fangs, you need more long range at this point.

    3000 point

Do whatever you want...you have enough points to waste.

One other minor note on the Mark of the Wulfen. Taking it on the Thunderwolf is pointles, as someone pointed out, but you also can't use a TH AT ALL when you have the Mark. The attacks occur with "teeth and claws" only, and no weapon modifications are allowed. So never waste points on a special close combat weapon and the MotW. You still get to shoot if you want a plasma pistol or something like that, of course.
