Having worked in IT on web development for a couple of companies, I can tell you that this is honestly no surprise whatsoever.

If there is a codex:skitaari/mechanicus, and they don't have an option for dark mechanicus or as battle brothers for chaos, will that mean a dark mechanicus separate codex? I see that as unlikely. A codex skitaari though leaves it open for a future dark mechanicus/cult mechanicus codex, again unlikely but maybe more workable.
Just thinking back to the decision not too make knights battle brothers with chaos out seemed to some that was a slight or oversight. But to me and others I thought that was left as an opening for a chaos knight codex.

What are people's preferences for how mars and knights are covered?

I think GW need to set up a standing order system so that you can just direct part of your wages straight to them. like when I set up an account for Gas, and you pay £70 a month, during the summer you build up a surplus to cover the winter. GW should do that, you build up a surplus for months when there is nothing that interests you, then you can blow it all on new stuff that does...
