Default GW: 40K Kits Moving into Toy Model Stores

images via Tiny Plastic Spacemen and Spikeybits Hobbies (Facebook) 1-27-2016

Facebook user Chris Smith got these images at the Nuremberg toy fair. These pictures show a new line of Games Workshop "Build & Paint" kits that look to be aimed specifically at toy and model shops.

Note the following:

• Colored plastic, removing the base coating step for some of the kits.
• Very small simple GW kits with few parts.
• Paints, glue and brushes included.
• Good pricepoint for all the hobby gear included.
• November 2016 Targeted release.

I think this is a FANTASTIC new approach by GW. They are taking some older existing assets and using them to put together an introductory line aimed at newcomers who have never heard of Warhamer 40,000. It's a good sign of Nottingham pushing out into new markets to reach anew demographic.

Interesting stuff.

Wonder how 'mock up' mock up is - sample of the kind of thing, with new models to come, or literally just 'boxes may differ'

I think the bike kit says on the box it also comes with a captain. What looks like a terminator sergeant is sitting next to the bike sprue. It looks to me like the plastic Terminators that came before Assault on Blackreach. Might just be a place holder. Maybe this box will have the captain from Blackreach?

Do you think the paints are layer paints or base paints?

Super glue or plastic glue? Plastic glue could get kids into a completely different hobby, super glue causes more immediate mishaps.

The ork battletrukk raises a few questions. A Battletrukk isn't a real unit. The artwork is from the trukk from Gorkamorka. Surely those molds were tossed, right? The mold for the Gorkamorka trukk is almost the same age as the space marine bike, and I think that the gorkamorka trukk sprue had a couple of boys on the same sprue.

I wonder if the boxes will made out of cheaper cardboard, like the thin stuff all the other model kits use.

Also if they wanted to boost sales to new customers, they could make the back part of the box cut out cardboard terrain like the stuff that used to come in the WD.

Current ork trukk retails for $44 Canadian and the BUILD+PAINT kits states it as $27CAD

I suspect the ork war bike is the second edition plastic ork bike

No reason for them to have tossed old molds. The old Trukk wasn't terrible. I still use some in my multi-clan army. They have a special place in my heart.

If you look at the Assault on Black Reach many of the sprues are orks and marines mixed. The dread can be isolated from the rest of the sprue, but the termies are all mixed up. I'm willing to bet the termies are second edition plastic.

no second edition plastic were their own thing they came on small bases, assault on black reach termies are current sized/based and have a bit more possability/detail. ide bet theyre something entirely different. maybe multiples of single sprues

You can modify a sprue setup. Heck, the people who make knockoff copies are able to pull it off, I'm pretty sure the guys with the originals can do a better job if they want. You can see they've got at least one sprue of AoBR Orks there, so it's not unreasonable to think they'd go that route.

Either way, you just don't want to showcase the 2E starter Marines. The Orks weren't that bad, but the Marines were pretty light on detail. They stand out against other Marines of the time, they're certainly going to look wrong next to more modern figures.

Well maybe it will come back in the new Ork codex next year?

What I don't understand is why will 8 year olds be using glue and exacto knives?

Also wouldn't GW be shooting themselves in the foot? I mean showing you that if you want GW toys, you will have to assemble them off a sprue, and paint them while other fully built, in a lot of cases movable limbs and no assembly required. I know when I was 8, and my kids, we wanted to play right away out of the box.

Why is GW targeting 8 year olds now? I know they pissed off the veterans, did they piss of all the teens now that Little Timmies are not buying anymore so they need to target younger kids now?

What is the most important rule? That we should do whatever the hell we want, but preferably in the best interests of Games workshop when possible? :P Ill go with that
