    Default Any news on Tyranids?

It turns out my coworker is a former Tyranid player from about 8 years ago. He wants to get back into the hobby quite a bit, but I'm not entirely sure on where their codex is in the update schedule. I'd hate for him to spend $40 on the book just to have a new edition pop up a couple months later.

It's not a great one to get back into the swing with at the moment.

Quite apart from subjective arguments about whether it's 'competitive' or not, it doesn't contain all the available units (Brainbugs and that are in a campaign expansion)

Probably worth waiting a few months, as I reckon we'll see it this year - especially as it's currently in Softback format. That's generally considered a strong indicator a new version is on the way. Whether it's a whole re-write, or just adding the disparate units into the one book is anyone's guess.

Yeah, neither of us are competitive types. Just casual, for-fun gamers.

He still has all his models from before, so starting a different army wouldn't be the better route for him. I'm just not sure if he should spend the cash, or obtain the rules in a less official manner until a new edition comes along.

Mystery Industries cannot endorse alternative methods of obtaining the rules, except for on the second hand market.

Even then, it may be largely wasted cash due to the aforementioned suspicion there's an update of some kind in the offing.

    And indeed, with Deathwatch Overkill

    (it's compulsory)

introducing Genestealer Hybrids, it could be right around the corner.

It had been rumoured for first quarter this year

It was rumoured to be released in January, which means it'll be out some time in November, most likely.

With the current rerelease of the Space Wolve, Tau, and Ork suppliment, I would say that a new tyranid codex will see all minis brought in under 1 book, with the addition of maybe 1 new unit, and deturion formation rules.
Yes I misspell stuff, you'll live.

Oh, and I'm at my LGS right now and the Tyranids codex on the shelf is a hardback.

A lot of stores still have the hardback, but in GW's online store the only hardback that even comes up in a search is the small format one. In fact, because I was curious about a possible update myself, I was looking into the Tyranids codex on their store just two days ago, and now it's showing the softback to be out of stock as well. I feel that this is a good sign for an incoming update, but that's entirely speculation on my part.
