    Default Angels of Caliban

A mere day away from the release of the next HH novel, Angels of Caliban and I excited and expectant to say the least.

The author is Gav Thorpe which is excellent news, his 40K DA books are excellent and he really builds the idea that the DA aren't exactly what they seem to the wider Imperium. I felt the two earlier DA HH novels by Mitchell Scanlon and Mike Lee were a simple rehash of the standard 40K view of the DA inception story and not really anything we haven't heard before.

I'm hoping for more from Gav. The other stories surrounding Imperium Secondus do seem to suggest the Lion is up to something so I'm hoping for some shady dealings. It's just been so long since Gav's first DA book sowed the seed that the Fallen were not as Traitorous as the Reat of the DA would have us believe. I hoping for some intrigue, and quite frankly that there is more to the Dark Angels and the Fallen.

Of course this goes without saying I want to see the Night Lords and the Night Naunter sowing fear and Chaos across Ultramar and dare I say it the dramatic return of Sevatar to his "brothers" in the VIII.

But what about the rest of you are you happy with the "excepted" 40K regarding the Fallen or do you want it to be a little more twisted. It just seems a little odd to me the Terran Astartes of the DA were the ones who allegedly turned to Horus when those are the ones culled in the other Legions when they turned.

The impression I have always gotten from the Dark Angels - and I haven't read all the books, so I could be mistaken here - is that originally neither side were properly heretics. Sure, there may have been some element of wanting to see which way the wind was blowing, but each side genuinely believed that the other had fallen and took that as a personal betrayal. It seems exactly the sort of scheme that Horus and Lorgar would implement on a legion they were uncertain about.

It's quite clear that some of the Fallen are now Chaos worshippers, but considering how drastically the Imperium has changed it would be child's play to whisper in their ears and convince them to overthrow the new Imperium, and maybe Horus did have the right idea after all if this is what he knew was going to happen... And as the Thousand Sons demonstrate, Chaos starts looking much more appealing once you're backed into a corner with no way out except through the Dark Gods. (And I recall it being canonical that some Fallen didn't turn Chaos and have been found trying to improve whatever little corner of humanity they ended up dropped into?)

From the perspective of the Deathwing, "we falsely believed half our Legion was on Horus' side and accidentally drove them into chaos worship" is just as shameful as "half our Legion sided with Horus". Probably more so, actually, because the latter paints them as the noble side trying to fix past errors.

That's sort of thing I'm talking about.

It's the just that the 2 HH books seem to be steering things towards Luthor being a traitor an siding with Horus. And that's nowhere near as good a tale, I don't mind it being the smoke smokescreen the DA use to hide the truth that's a good bit of fluff I just want the truth to be a bit more juicy.

It's entirely possible to have Luthor potentially being a traitor while most of his side think they're fighting for the Emperor. And to have pockets of Horus-sympathisers on the Lion's side. It certainly happened in other Legions, hence the purges, and if they're being a bit more subtle about it and aiming to subvert rather than wastefully kill the loyalists it plays nicely into several people's hands. Betrayal from your brothers is an emotion that Chaos is going to find easier to capitalise on than the loyalists, because it provokes so many raw and hasty actions.

Well that is entirely reasonable but I want more intrigue and they've already done that a bit with the White Scars. This is the HH it can't be meh and it kinda was with the set up DA novels.

Nothing in the HH yet confirms what Luther is up to other than he was building up loyalty among those on Caliban against the Lion and has now cemented that loyalty.

Is he doing this out of support for Horus? Loyalty to the Emperor or just wanting to be free from the tyranny of others ruling his planet? We don't know yet.

So, and I'm showing my age here, WAAAAAAAAAAY back when, (maybe early 90's), when GW allowed authors some free reign on what they wrote as long as the basics were upheld: there was a short story of a DA Captain who, during the Crusade, had fought a battle on a demon-world moon, that the gravity was so low he actually got blown off the surface in to space. He put himself into sus-an, and floated through frikkin space until the last ergs of energy died in his suit............ I cannot recall how he got found, or if he survived reentry or something, but basically he was reunited with the DA, and immediately censured as one of the Fallen. the Captain was never turned by Chaos, and was still loyal in his own mind. it was a cool read, wish I could relate the story better.
