    Default Kyril Sindermann FMP

    Hi everyone,

For my Final Major Project at college I've been looking at sculpting the character of Kyril Sindermann from the Horus Heresy books.

I've never done anything like this before, no sculpting whatsoever, so it was a little daunting.

But after some tests using Milliput, I got my hands on some Super Sculpey and today I've been busy using it...

I'd really like some input, good or bad.

Like I said, I've never done any sculpting, so this is a first real attempt. I'm really happy with it, I know it's not perfect but it was never going to be. This is sort of how I personally imagine Kyril to look.

C&C is appreciated so please let me know what you think.

I'm just curious, but do you know the significance of the way you've sculpted the eyes? Not sure if that was intention or not because I haven't read the books.

Not bad for your first time sculpting My biggest critique is that it looks like you could have used a better armature so that the skull was more evenly rounded.

Hiya, a few tips, and a couple of vid's. You need a basic form to work from and it seems to me, that you did it all in one go. It seems to tilt to one side, which is often the result of doing to many things at once. Start out with a basic head shape with no features at all and then add to it as you go. To see what I mean, look at these vid's. They do it in clay, but the principals are the same. It is especially the layering technique I want you to look at, that way you build up on the anatomic of the face and get the features to be placed correctly and in proportion to each other. It is a great first try thou

Not really, I just sculpted them not really thinking. Thanks, I'll bare that in mind next time

    Thanks Crae,

I did in fact use a kitchen foil base, and sculpted on top of that, and I built it up in layers just like the video (I watched many like it prior to doing this). But I agree that I need to practice the proportions and such. Hopefully I can fix some of the features tomorrow.

Thanks for the help and advice.

Ah. In classical sculpting, you would hollow out the pupils of the eyes to represent that the subject of the sculpture is dead.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, though. Only a very special kind of geek would catch you on something like that. If the guy happens to be dead in the fluff, then it's a little bonus thing you can mention to your teachers.

I do a lot of super sculpy sculpting, but have never undertaken a bust, so all I can talk about is what I see. Some parts look great, like his throat and wrinkles, but the head is seriously uneven. The right side (of the picture) needs to come up higher and be rounded the same way as the left side, and the mouth seems a little small and thin. I think you could correct both of those issues without remaking the whole thing and it would be improved considerably.

When it comes to anatomy, there is no substitute for practice. Keep at it!
