Arguably there is more historical precendent for the other system.
Also systematically the way that the counting system has evolved you group things until you have X units of X and then define that to be Y.
The whole numbering system is kinda messed up
I'm quite happy with 0-10 being "uniquely defined" and 11-99 being derivates of our 11 (10+1) building blocks, then after ninety nine you then can't have ten ten as it is too big, so we have a new definition, hundred, then following the usual patern we get up to 999 then after that should come ten hundred (still in common usage) but more often one thousand which is kinda anomalous, then we end up with 99,999 after that would come one hundred hundred so again that should be named something so the whole counting system is wrong.

Here are your two options:
Correctly deploy 3 figure groupings, unfortunately between 0-999 we still have 0-10 defined and 100 defined as well but after that we have
1 killa = 1,000 = 1*10^3
1 mega = 1,000 killa = 1,000,000 = 1*10^6
1 giga = 1,000 mega = 1,000,000,000 = 1*10^9

or

again have 0-10 defined
then at "ten ten" have that as a hundred (100)
then the next name is "hundred hundred" and call that a thousand (10,000)
then next "thousand thousand" and call that a million (100,000,000)
then next "million million" and call that a billion (10,000,000,000,000,000)

and for most practical purposes we wouldn't need to get much larger...
