Sort of. There is no such thing as 'official cult status' but it did fail the religion test as to be officially recognised as a religion you have to have charity status and they fail the charity test as you have to pay to be a member. There was no official recognition of what they are, so whether they are a cult, club or secret society is entirely up for debate. As I understand they do qualify as a religion in the USA, though I'm unsure how they classify things as religions.

However the process of robo-insemination is far too complex for the human mind!

Was widely reported as being 'officially a cult'. But that could well be the lazy standard of sensationalist journalism we're subjected to.

Don't Mormons too have to pay to be a member? There is a small Mormon community near where I live and they did try to proselytise me once in the street. Thoroughly nice, well dressed chaps too and their Christianity-lite seemed slightly more favourable to a skeptic like me. Apparently after the Rapture I'm more likely to be just left wandering the Earth than tossed into the flaming pits of Hell.

Lazy reporting. There is no official 'cult', it's just a common descriptor for certain groups. They are legally classed as not-for-profit body, but that covers a fairly broad range of organisations.
